Translation into dead languages

Popular books –such as Harry Potter–are translated into an incredible number of languages. What is interesting is that it is translated not only into "living" languages, but also into "dead" languages. There exist books about Harry Potter in Latin, Ancient Greek etc. Translations into dead languages can therefore be very much alive and quite a challenge for translators, as, apart from the modern terminology, there are a lot of new, totally imaginary words.

Als

American Language Services e.g. ALS was founded in 1985. It originated in a modest language school which eventually became one of the largest and most respected translation agencies in the United States. ALS provides translation services all over the world, for all world languages. Translators of this translation agency are available 24/7.

Areas of expertise

It is almost a must for translators to specialize in specific areas of expertise. May this be gardening or mechanical engineering, it is important that translators have great knowledge in their areas of expertise. Only in this way can they provide professional and accurate translations.

Converting the units of measurement

When translating, the units of measurement have to be converted, since not everybody operates with kilograms and tons. One has to be careful since 10 kg does not equal 10 lbs. It is therefore necessary to translate the number from 10 kg to 22 lbs.

Translation "mileage"

Under the expression translation mileage we understand the number of pages or lines that a translator has translated in his career. This is, of course, a folk expression and it is not used in translation circles. However, it is interesting that people normally connect the number of translated pages with the length, and not necessarily with the quality of translation.

Translating seals and signatures

With certified translations, it is necessary to also translate the seals and signatures, because the translation has to be in every respect identical to the original. The seals are always translated as "seals", and the name of the company or person is indicated. With handwritten signatures, "illegible signature" is written down, and -if there is a written signature- the typed name is copied.
